Snapdragon Wheelchair
We wish to purchase a Snapdragon wheelchair for Josie, an 8-year-old girl who is growing up fast and rapidly growing out of her wheelchair. Josie has a diagnosis of Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type II; this is a genetic condition that affects the muscles. Because of poor muscle strength, she is unable to walk or weight bear and depends on her wheelchair. This, in turn, causes the simplest of tasks to become a tremendous struggle for her.
The chair which Josie has been using since nursery, allows her to rise and fall in height depending on what activity she is doing. The Snapdragon would crucially provide her with the necessary support she requires to meet all her postural needs. Obviously, mobility is not just all about the physical aspects of moving around, there is an especially important social and emotional impact of the ability to move as well. The Snapdragon wheelchair would enable Josie to live a much more normal life, allowing her to interact with her peers and adults alike with greater ease. It would be extremely safe, for both Josie, and for others around her. With your help, we would like to make Josie’s dream come true by replacing her old wheelchair at the cost of £24.000
An Autism support dog for Kieran.
This will be the 3rd Autism Support dog that we are privileged to be involved with, we have seen first-hand the difference an assistance dog makes to the life of an Autistic child. Kieran is diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, Anxiety (associated with Autism), hypermobility and Sensory Processing Disorder. Some of the effects of his condition mean that the daily life for this family is incredibly challenging. The main concerns are; Kieran escalates into meltdowns very quickly and can be physical towards his siblings. He does not adhere to boundaries and he does not share. Kieran shows echolalia tendencies (meaningless repetition of another person's spoken words) and lacks the understanding of language. Kieran finds it extremely hard to cope with change and this has worsened since March 2020. Kieran’s behaviour is deteriorating, and his parents are finding it increasingly harder to cope with his aggression. This is why the family are praying for a therapy dog which will help aid Kieran to interact better with his siblings.
Kieran’s Mum and Dad are desperate to be able to enjoy family activities with all the children. They have researched about support dogs and decided to have their needs assessed, some animal assisted therapy sessions were arranged with the family to ensure it was the route they wanted to take. His parents noticed improvements in Kieran’s and the other children's behaviours during the trials and have approached Make Them Smile for help to purchase their very own therapy dog. The main positives will be: Reduction in Kieran’s controlling behaviour, more positive sibling relationships, ability to go out together as a family, create a positive routine for all the family to take part in the care of the dog and use a reward scheme to encourage good behaviour. All the above outcomes are achievable by having a therapy dog to support Kieran and the whole family. Some results will be immediately apparent, and some will develop and show over time.
A variety of training for the whole family and one to one training will be included as well as Liaising with Kieran’s school to introduce the dog to the school environment. The cost of purchasing and then training an Assistance Dog to the required level, is £7,900.00
Innowalk Walking System
We wish to purchase an Innowalk for 5-year-old McKenzie, who is diagnosed with type 1 SMA.
His parents really want to get him into an Innowalk as soon as possible so that this wonderful personality trait can shine.
An Innowalk will help him to move and stand independently which will release pressure on his lungs enabling him to breathe better, this in turn will strengthen his respiratory system allowing him to move his muscles, thus preventing irreversible deterioration, in addition to giving him the independence he visibly needs and wants.
An Innowalk will help him to interact socially and allow him the freedom and independence it provides. It is the versatility and adaptability of an Innowalk that the family are confident will improve his standard of living. Without one they are concerned he will not achieve the developmental milestones he needs to have as a young child. At this point in his life, it is key that he does not feel inhibited by his disability and it starts with becoming mobile and independent like his peers.
The total cost of an Innowalk Pro is £13,000.
New Holiday Home 2021
One of our two holiday homes will be 10 year old this year.
Owing to its continuous use, it is now beginning to show signs of severe wear and deterioration.
Due to its age and it being specially adapted for wheelchairs and disability use, we have been advised that a refit would not be cost effective, nor practical.
We will not compromise the safety of our families and therefore, our only viable option is to exchange it for a later or brand-new model that is also wheelchair and disability friendly.
The replacement will cost between £38,000 and £48,000.
We appreciate this is a large amount of money, however each of our holiday homes provide respite breaks and holidays for more than 50 families each year. That would be approximately 500 families over its 10-year lifespan.
That will be equal to each respite break/holiday costing between £76 and £96 per family.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
2020 has been a horrendous year for families and charities alike, this year we have had an unprecedented number of families requiring our help.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we had to cancel most of the fundraising events we had planned.
However, we have been so fortunate to have some amazing supporters, thank you to each and every one of you.
This year, due to your support we have managed to help more families than any year previously, whether it was for food and essentials, help with utility bills, Medical equipment and aids, holidays and respite, and just as importantly much needed support.
None of this would have been possible without your kind support.
From everyone here at Make Them Smile, we would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe Happy New Year.

Last Saturday, 5th December, you completed 50.41 Miles of walking in 15 hours and 39 Mins.
Tacky loves walking but this was a completely different experience, especially on Saturday when it was very cold, slippery, and wet weather, but through this, she managed to complete the last 10 miles.
Thank you to BGL Peterborough for match funding, making a grand total of
£1120.00
Thank you so very much to Tacky and everybody who supported her, and for your generous donations and support.

50 miles walk
I am walking to raise funds for the “Make Them Smile” children's charity. Any funds raised will be split as follows:
Purchasing an Eye-Gaze System for a little girl, who has a rare childhood brain tumor, which has left her with severe impaired ability to co-ordinate movement. The system will help her to relieve isolation and improve independence with her homework and other tasks.
To help provide funding for the charity's respite holiday home.

Oxford Advance Electric Hoist
It is with thanks to our supporters that we are pleased to announce that we have now managed to purchase the Oxford Advance Electric hoist.
This will be delivered to the family this week
The Oxford Advance Electric hoist will help a family in Birmingham with a 13 year old daughter who suffers from Cerebral Palsy – Spastic Quadriplegia and who are, at present, having to carry her each time she needs to be moved.
Having an electric hoist that can be folded down and easily moved from room to room will have an amazing impact on this family’s life.
We wish them all the best for the future
Brett
A big thank you to Brett for helping with our food deliveries.
"The A Team"
Thank you to Ian, Tony, Karen and Paul for all the hard work and commitment you have given us durings these last 8 months. From the bottom of our hearts, Thank you
Cordellia (10), Jareth (3) and Sienna (8)
We are in desperate need to purchase and then have trained a Therapy Dog for a family of 3 children (Cordellia 10, Jareth 3 & Sienna 8). Two of the children have autism and one with a very rare form of epilepsy resulting in 40 + seizures a day. The children are battling and have overcome many medical obstacles throughout their young lives and are continuing to battle on.
The Psychologist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital has recommended that Cordellia and Jareth would benefit from an Autism Support Dog. This would allow them to develop their confidence and build their social skills as well as to help regulate their emotions as they grow up. They say that a service dog would provide invaluable support regarding their anxiety issues. Sadly, the family did have a pet dog (Kenny) who behaved in many ways like a support dog but unfortunately, he died. Kenny seemed to help the children remain calm and to be able to participate in family activities.
Sienna would also benefit from having a Therapy dog as it would provide comfort and support when she is out of the house as she has a tracheotomy and poor mobility which leaves her wheelchair bound. Unfortunately, many members of the public aren’t too kind and find themselves staring at her. Sienna has also been subject to cruel words and a support dog would give her something to distract her from the negativity she receives.
The cost of purchasing and training an assistance dog is approximately £6,500.

COVID-19 – AND THE IMPACT IT IS HAVING ON OUR CHARITY
The last 8 months have been very trying times for all of us, not least, here at Make Them Smile.
Practically all fundraising has been suspended, yet we have managed to continue to help, the best we can.
So now during these uncertain times, we need your support more than ever.
Please continue to fundraise and donate to help us through these tough times. Alternatively, you can make a one-off donation or set up a monthly donation.
The packages announced by the government to help small businesses with loans and grants are not available to small, non-trading charities like us.
However, the children and families who rely on us for practical, financial and emotional support, will still need our help thought this pandemic, so however you choose to support us during this time, we are incredibly grateful to you!
THANK YOU!
Following the government guidelines due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were forced to cancel all bookings to our holiday homes. As upsetting as this has been for the children and ourselves, we have now managed to re arrange all bookings and are exceptionally pleased to announce that we will be welcoming our first 2 families on site next week.
Thank you again Alison

Eye-gaze
We are currently fundraising for an Eye-Gaze system for a 15 year old child who has juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma (a rare childhood brain tumour).
This has left her with severe impaired ability to co-ordinate movements, meaning that it is difficult for her to write and use technology that her peers are able to use.
Because of this she is continuously feeling withdrawn and left behind whilst her friends are keeping in contact and interacting with each other. The Eye-Gaze will not only help her to relieve her isolation, but it will also help her to improve her independence when completing homework and other tasks. With an Eye-Gaze system she will be able to do her own research and investigations into topics by only using her eyes.
The system costs £5,800.00

MADALINA Madalina is 8 years of age and suffers from Autism Spectrum, she is easily fatigued and has very poor stamina. OSCAR UPDATE
We have now purchased the brailer for Oscar, he is doing well and everybody concerned are happy with his progress.
We wish Oscar all the best for the future
OSCAR
Oscar is 5 years old and has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Global Development Delay, Periventricular Leukomelia and he also has a severe visual impairment. He can only see about 3ft of what is in front of him and has been registered blind. He has been learning Braille at school, it's almost like having to read and write again. Due to his Global development delay, sometimes it can take him longer to learn things than other children. To continue to make steady progress he needs to try and learn whenever possible.
Oscar's teacher has recommended that a Mountbatten Brailler would be beneficial for Oscar as it will grow with him. He will be able to type out his own school work in Braille and then print it in writing. It is also battery operated so he will be able to use it on-the-go.
The Mountbatten Brailler will cost £3738.00

POPPY
"Poppy" has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy Spastic Quadriplegia. As a result, Poppy has limited movement in her limbs. She is 11 years old and her parents are struggling to carry her up the stairs into the family bathroom. In attempt to maintaining her dignity, her parents have applied for an extension to Poppy's bedroom to include a fully assessable bathroom which is on the ground floor. Poppys medical Consultants have advised that a hydrotherapy bath/shower would be Beneficial to her as when she has hydrotherapy sessions, her muscles are more relaxed and it helps to decrease the tone (stiffness) in her arms and legs. We are aiming to assist with the cost of tiling and flooring and essentials such as hoists to ease her families struggle at bath time.Ideally we would like to help further with the cost of a Hydrotherapy bath. We would like to complete funding by July/August 2019.If you wish to make a donation to support Poppy, please visit our Donate page to find out how.
We have changed "Poppy's" name at the request of mum
Below are pictures of "Poppy" having Hydrotherapy
FINLEY
Finley is 11 years old suffering with Hemiparasis.
We have granted Finley with his very own tricycle which will give him the stability and confidence to get out of the house and play with friends and family.
Having his own tricycle that he can ride will give him a chance to be more independant and he will feel more content. It is evident with the pictures his family have sent that he is really enjoying his new tricycle. We wish him all the best for the future.
OLIVIA
Olivia has been diagnosed with EIEE5 (Early infantile epileptic encephalopathy) which means she has snippets of every epilepsy syndrome. Olivia suffers with between 150 to 200 seizures a day which means constant alarms are going off and there are numerous amounts of medication to be administered by her parents and carers at least 12 times a day, one of these times being 3am. This has made life extremely difficult for her family and sadly Olivia is now under palliative (end of life) care. Olivia is also blind and non-verbal and has also has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and dislocated hips and shoulders. All her family would like to do is take a small break away from home with her and their normal "day to day" life, however in order for them to have the flexibility to do this they have asked if we can provide a Leckey Wheelbase to Olivia's bath chair as the NHS couldn't provide one.
HOLIDAY HOME BOOKINGS
During January 2019 we have taken numerous bookings for our adapted caravan in Mablethorpe. As all holidays we have limited availability, therefore we would also like to advise that if you know a family that fits our criteria and would benefit from a small break away right next to the golden sands at Mablethorpe to fill in our application form and apply as soon as possible.
